The Goleen area is a great place for families with so much to do. I have four kids myself aged 4yrs, 6yrs, 10yrs and 11yrs. In the good weather we spend as much time as we can down on the beach. Barleycove is our favourite as the older ones go body boarding in the surf while the two younger ones explore the stream, with their fishing nets catching shrimp and small crabs. We also have a few inflatables that take them down stream on the current. When it is a bit quieter we also spend time on Galley Cove which is the small beach on the way to Crookhaven that looks out towards the Fastnet Lighthouse.
When the wind is up or we just fancy doing something different one of the favourite expeditions is to the nearby Mizen Vision. The younger ones love the souvenir shop there and we have cake and coffee in the café. We have often been down across the bridge to the lighthouse and the views are incredible.
Crookhaven village is another favourite destination especially for a hot chocolate and a piece of cake at the Crookhaven Inn and sometime we treat ourselves to something off the menu. It is a tough choice as O’Sullivan’s serves some great soup, their seafood chowder is one of my own favourites. You can sit outside on the pier and watch all the sailing boats out in the harbour and when the tide is low there is a small beach that the kids can play. In the evening the place can be busy enough and there is good value food available at Nottages or a take out from Colin’s Take Away. Crookhaven Sailing Club run a popular series of courses and the regatta in August is very popular.
We like our kids to do some kind of organised activity during the summer and the Schull and Fitbones is very popular with our eldest. The variety of activities is great like hiking, cycling, exploring tunnels, island trips, beach BBQ, orienteering, all under the supervision of Deirdre Ni Challanain.
Our eldest two are looking forward to trying out the Barleycove Surf Camp this year which will be a welcome addition to beach life this summer. Mizen Rovers run the VHI Cúl Camp will be held in Goleen from 26/07/10 - 30/07/10 to book your place contact Tim Sheehan 086-7389567. My lad is a big rugby fan and he is signed up for the Munster Rugby Camp in Skibbereen at the end of August, there are also soccer and basketball camps being held in Skibbereen.
Nearer to home the Goleen Playgroup run an activity week during the summer at the Goleen Community Sports Centre and there is a regular table tennis camp held prior to the Goleen Festival in August. Details of these will be posted on the website when available.
Horse Riding, fishing, boat trips are all available locally just check out the posters around the village.
With so many things to do our biggest problem is trying to fit it all in during the summer! But there again there are loads of things to do during the winter as well. We do hope you enjoy your stay and if you can’t do it all this time why not visit us again.
