experience and is also a well known destination for the surfer and body boarder. The small strool (stream) leading down to the sea caters for those who like to paddle and hunt for small shrimp. The coast line is dotted with other small beaches including the popular Cockleshell Strand and Galley Cove favourites with the locals. Even in winter time this area is popular with birdwatchers and nature lovers. Crookhaven attracts boat lovers with all its facilities as well as those looking for lunch and dinner with a number of fine eateries. The spectacular coastal drive along Dunmanus Bay and past the ruins of the castle is truly astonishing. Whether you are touring in your car or under your own steam on a bicycle this area has much to offer and you will be greeted by some of the friendliest folk in Ireland and a fine selection of accommodation. If looking to explore further afield Schull, Ballydehob, Bantry and Skibbereen are all within easy access. This is a vibrant, growing, lively community, which is attracting more residents and keeping young people at home. |

A new addition to the Lowertown population....
Family Fun at the Route To Crook
There was plenty of fun for all at this year's Route 2 Crook with a kids race, walkers and some serious runners all taking advantage of the sunshine as they made their way from Goleen to Crookhaven. 147 competitors raced in the adult event. George Waugh from Rising Sun AC took 1st place in the mens event with a time of 27:25. Liam Cotter St. Finbarrs AC took 1st place in the M45 event and 6th in the overall results in a time of 29:17 Tony O'Halloran from Dundrum South Dublin AC was the first in the M50 event. Catherine Keohane of Leevale AC led the women home in a time of 33:59. Results available to download HERE
Vintage Car Rally
There was a fine collection of old automobiles on the road from Goleen to Crook as the sun glinted off the highly polished paintwork of the vintage cars on display for the benefit of old and young alike. The cars were accompanied by a fine collection of vintage tractors.

Dunmanus Bay Marine Association Digital Photography Competition 2010 is open to all Amateur
Photographers resident on The Sheep’s Head Peninsula, The Mizen Peninsula and visitors to the area to take up the challenge to enter the Dunmanus Bay Marine Association Digital Photography Competition. Festival Table Tennis
Around 30 competitors took part in the Annual Goleen Table Tennis Festival Tournament, with a good mix of local and holidaymakers taking part. Local U10 James Kelly was the surprise winner of the final against Thomas O'Grady from Bantry. Kelvin Forde won the 2nd Division event and Goleen girls Mair Kelly, Mairéad Supple and Aisling O'Driscoll finished in the top 3 places in the girls event. The Festival Tournament was held at the end of a very successful 3 day intensive training camp. A big improvement was shown by a number of players and this bodes well for the up coming season starting in September.
RURAL BUS RESUMES SUMMER SCHEDULE
The Community Council in conjunction with West Cork Rural Transport has resumed
its summer schedule with the running of the West Cork Rural Bus on Saturday nights. The schedule is up in the usual outlets in Goleen, Crookhaven and
Barleycove. Enjoy your time out and respect all who run and use this service.

Local Beaches Ballyrisode, Galley Cove and Cadogans Strand Awarded Green Coastal Beach Standard

These three local beaches have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag by An Taisce and TIDY Northern Ireland, three out of the 10 awarded in County Cork. The much larger and better known Barleycove Beach deservedly retains its Blue Flag status making the Goleen area one of the best beach resorts in the country.
What is a Green Coastal Beach? Green Coast beaches are ideal for those wishing to enjoy a beach experience far removed from the intrusions normally associated with the traditional and more urban seaside beaches. The Green Coast Award beaches meet the top water quality standard set by the European Union. They are also inspected to ensure management plans are being adhered to. Therefore Green Coast Award beaches are perfect places for enjoying our rich coastal heritage and diversity.

Championships held in Goleen. Mairéad Supple (U12/U14)took two second places with James Kelly (U10/U12) taking a

ROUTE TO CROOK
The Route To Crook is a popular road race between Goleen and Crookhaven along the scenic coast road.
It is held annually in August as part of the Goleen & District Summer Festival.

This ferry service saves 600km (375 miles) driving on a round trip and connects the M4 Motorway in the UK directly to Cork on Ireland's South coast. The service will offer overnight sailing 6 nights a week (Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday from Cork and Wednesday, Friday & Sunday from Swansea) departing at 21:00 and arriving at 7:00 the next morning. Additional sailings will be added in the high season. |

West Cork Rapid Response is a voluntary group located in West Cork, Ireland. We work in partnership with the existing HSE Medical Emergency services with a Rapid Response Vehicle servicing all of West Cork.
For instance…in the case of a call-out to an accident/incident, a doctor actually arrives in the vehicle to assist at the roadside. The vehicle contains all the necessary life saving equipment, just like a Mobile A&E Department. An emergency call to 999 /112 is passed on to the required service / Fire / Ambulance / Gardai / Doctor / Priest etc. WCRR is another link in this chain of saving lives.
